Celebrating a Quarter Century of Courage

We’ve all heard the old catch phrases: “Variety is the spice of life” ,“Cut to the chase” and “What we really need is a fresh outlook”.  But how often are these sentiments delivered upon, especially all in one place?  The 25th annual Brave New Play Rites festival is about to take up that challenge, by providing over five action-packed days with plays that “cut to the chase” by telling whole stories in under fifteen minutes.  The variety of the characters, content, and genres of the plays keep things spicy and with hot new playwrights, directors, and actors, there are fresh outlooks to spare under the extremely adept guidance of industry veterans Bryan Wade and John Cooper.

Seeing your words come to life for the very first time, there’s some magic in that.  This is where theatre makers get hooked”  -Wade Kinley, UBC joint Creative Writing/theatre grad student, festival playwright and director.

This year’s festival boasts over thirty actors, thirteen plays, thirteen directors, nearly a dozen designers, one staged reading, nearly twenty crew members, and twenty five years of history under its belt.  All of the plays in the festival are no longer than fifteen minutes and each play has three performances over the five-day festival.  The range in subject matter and tone of the plays is astounding.   There is a play about a mascot support group (A Brief History of a Mascot Support Group), the fallout from a ten year old boy’s suicide attempt (Dylan’s Day), how a psychiatrist might deal with having a greek god as an outpatient (Acestor), a father and son’s experience with internet dating (Love Lessons), and so many others.  Each play is developed though a rigorous dramaturgical process, followed by an extensive rehearsal period where newly minted directors test the skills they have been honing for the past four years.

“New writers, new directors, new work…what could be more exciting!” – John Cooper, Professional Director (Death of a Salesman) and Brave New Play Rites Directing Instructor.

For twenty-five years the Brave New Play Rites festival has been feeding the Canadian theatre scene with confident and experienced theatre artists.  Come experience theatre history in the making!
