Comedies, tragedies, musicals, fairytales, dramas… All words that indicate what we are about to witness when the lights go down in the theatre, but what if you don’t want to choose just one of these genres? Luckily the 26th annual Brave New Play Rites festival is here to give you 15 minute theatre taste sensations. The festival takes place over five action packed days and includes twelve -15 minute plays and an afternoon of play readings. With hot new playwrights, directors and actors, under the adept guidance of industry veterans Bryan Wade and Stephen Heatley, the mix becomes a sensational delight.
“Brave New Play Rites festival is awesome because it gives writers and directors the chance to experiment without fear of bombing and losing money that they don’t really have in the first place. It’s also great exposure for everyone involved.” -Tristan Koster, Creative Writing student, festival playwright (Table for Three)
This year’s festival includes over thirty actors, a twelve plays, twelve directors, over a dozen designers, one staged reading, nearly twenty crew members and twenty six years of history under its belt. All of the plays in the festival are no longer than fifteen minutes and each play has three performances over the five-day festival.
From a lighthearted look at men’s relationships with the size of their… Ahem… member, to a soul searching inside look at the struggles faced everyday in Canadian abortion clinics, to a fairytale look at a hipster prince’s quest for love, the range in subject matter and tone is astounding. Each play is written and developed by senior creative writing students and undergo a rigorous dramaturgical process, followed by an extensive rehearsal period where senior directing students test the skills they have been honing for nearly half a decade in the highly respected UBC theatre program.
“The most exciting collaborative work I’ve ever been a part of!” – Dianne Cronmiller, Former Brave New Play Rites director (lower case love in a two man tent, 2011) and current Brave New Play Rites actor
For twenty-six years the Brave New Play Rites festival has been feeding the Canadian theatre scene with confident, experienced theatre artists. Come experience theatre history in the making!
