Vancouver, BC – For one week every year, the UBC departments of Creative Writing and Theatre band together to bring a series of new theatrical creations to life. The Brave New Play Rites Festival is a training ground for the next generation of Vancouver theatre artists.
Eighteen playwrights, twelve directors, twenty actors, and twelve designers will be working together to create twelve short productions and a Staged Reading Series of an additional six original plays, all of which are under fifteen minutes in length. Each evening of programming offers a diverse sampling of the total festival, but multiple trips are necessary to take in the whole. This year’s festival includes a raccoon couple trying to find affordable real estate, an exploration of two sisters in the wake of a tragedy, and an investigation to determine, once and for all, why the chicken actually crossed the road.
New this year, Festival Directors Tom Scholte and Bryan Wade have put together a core company of actors, many of whom are receiving university credit for their participation, giving audience members the pleasure of seeing actors take on multiple roles in a single night — not to mention a rare challenge for the actors!
Now in its 27th year, many of the festival’s alumni have gone on to become prominent members of Vancouver’s artistic community, including Maureen Medved (author/screenwriterThe Tracey Fragments), Aaron Bushkowsky (co-artistic director Solo Collective), Dave Deveau (My Funny Valentine, two upcoming productions with Greenthumb Theatre), C.E. Gatchalian (Falling on Time, Broken), Steven Galloway (novelist The Cellist of Sarajevo), and Jordan Hall (current PTC Associate, Samuel French award-winning play Kayak).
