THE 28TH ANNUAL BRAVE NEW PLAY RITES FESTIVAL AT UBC
What is the next generation of Vancouver theatre artists exploring?
VANCOUVER, BC — The Brave New Play Rites Festival seeks to answer that question, programming a week of fifteen minute plays each spring, combining the time and talents of students from UBC’s Creative Writing and Theatre departments. Twenty-one playwrights, twelve directors, twenty actors, and six designers will be working together to create twelve short productions and a Staged Reading Series. Each evening of programming offers a diverse sampling of the total festival, with multiple trips necessary to take in the whole.
This is a truly exciting year with a diverse range of voices and genres exploring contemporary issues here, and around the globe. There’s a family drama set in the Philippines, an exploration of the Boston Marathon bombing, an encounter with Tinkerbell and the 15 year old girl playing Peter Pan, a married couple examining their relationship while drifting in a lifeboat off the coast of Victoria BC, a skewed Godot riff with two guys in a bar, and a hypothetical glimpse into real life story of Diana, the Hunter of Bus Drivers, set in Juarez. And of course, the apocalypse.
New this year, the Staged Reading Series is getting a bump into the spotlight with nine new works in development to be directed by professionals from the Vancouver theatre community. Peter Boychuk (Rumble Theatre’s Interim Managing Director and playwright, Shelter from the Storm, Fritters in Kandahar) and Wade Kinley (Brave New alumnus and playwright, Glendale) have been working with playwrights and actors to help realize the scripts which will be showcased in the Staged Reading Series. Says Boychuk, “In the end, the only way to learn how to be a playwright is by getting your plays produced. Brave New Play Rites provides a vital first opportunity for student playwrights to get to work with trained actors, directors and designers, and then watch how an audience responds.”
