2015 Media Release
Vancouver, B.C.—For its 29th anniversary, UBC’s Brave New Play Rites Festival ventures off campus premiering twelve short plays at Studio 1398 on Granville Island. The festival’s Staged Readings Series at PTC includes a panel talk on new play development with some of Vancouver’s most innovative theatre artists. The produced plays, written by UBC Creative Writing students, are an ambitious collaboration between emerging and established directors and actors from our vibrant artistic community. Twenty writers, twelve directors, nearly thirty actors, and three designers create stories of profundity, hilarity, darkness, and chaos.
A broad and diverse range of voices and genres explore issues that are local, international, and out of this world. A Japanese-American family copes with the eldest sibling in WWII while facing racism at home. A boy tell us the incendiary tale of how his house burned down. A love triangle leads to a sword fight. Individuals engage in an experimental portrait of speech therapy. A suicidal woman is talked down by her lover’s ghost. A couple attempts sex while a nephew bathes in the next room. A quiz-master has an epic breakdown on trivia night. And when a frustrated writer and an overwhelmed nurse meet in a Tim Horton’s, magic happens.
See 2015 Festivals and Staged Readings for complete information for all the featured theatre artists.
Brave New has partnered with ITSAZOOS’s renowned Co-Artistic Producer Chelsea Haberlin as the festival’s directing consultant, guiding our early-career directors and serving as an experienced soundboard to mid-career artists.
