UBC Celebrates 30 Years of Brave New

When Professor Bryan Wade first landed in the Creative Writing Department in 1986, he had a simple idea: get playwriting students to write short plays as part of their course. Then, find a theatre space. Recruit a few directors and audition some actors. Take those plays off the page and onto the stage, and invite the public to attend. There is no better learning experience for an emerging playwright than to witness their own work in production in front of a live audience.

2016 BNPR Press Release

Vancouver, B.C. — For its 30th anniversary, UBC’s Brave New Play Rites Festival is premiering twelve short plays at Studio 1398 on Granville Island. The festival’s Staged Reading Series at PTC includes a panel talk on new play development with alumni of Brave New Play Rites and the UBC Creative Writing Program. The produced plays, written by BFA and MFA UBC Creative Writing students, are an ambitious collaboration between emerging and established directors and actors from our vibrant artistic community. Twenty-three writers, twelve directors, nearly thirty actors, and a four-member producing team create stories of profundity, hilarity, darkness, and chaos.

A broad and diverse range of voices and genres explore issues that range from the past, through the present and into the near future. Two childhood friends reminisce like a film being edited – remember, cut, reset, repeat. In a near future where technology built for the sharing of sensory memories has run rampant, one person struggles to remain free. Stories of intimacy and solitude are told through a bus ride, one for which the audience is invited on board, and onstage. A daughter struggles with childhood memories as she decides where to house her terminally ill mother. A woman runs into her old flame, Donald Trump.

See for complete information about all the featured theatre artists and shows.

The festival is now in its 30th year! Second and third productions of BNPR scripts have been staged in New York, Toronto and Scotland. Many of the festival’s alumni have gone on to become prominent members of Vancouver’s artistic community, including Maureen Medved (The Tracey Fragments), Dave Deveau (My Funny Valentine, Lowest Common Denominator), C.E. Gatchalian (Falling on Time, Broken), Jordan Hall (PTC Associate, Kayak) and Briana Brown (The Concessions, Touchstone Theatre).
